[This post is liable to change/add in information if I feel the need.]
Hello everyone,
This post is packed with spoilers from the entire franchise of Mahou Shoujo (Magical Girl) Lyrical Nanoha. Please be aware. I admit, I had to use Wikipedia to look up some information but I wrote everything myself otherwise.
Yeah, I have no idea what possessed me to write whole descriptions for three seasons of the show, but I am an insane Sarah anyway.
Aren't I a dedicated Sarah, too?
Since I am a rabid fan of MSLN, I decided to throw my hat into the ring and make this thread to search for someone to roleplay this franchise. The Nanoha series has such a rich and interesting way of portraying its magic and all the characters are wonderful, so I must find someone who is interested. Though, it is okay if someone wishes to roleplay this who is not familiar with Nanoha - a general roleplay is equally nice. Plus, I want this to be a group roleplay because Nanoha is just not Nanoha without tons of characters running around.
Since I love Nanoha so much, I shall describe the story. There are tons of spoilers but I will speed through them. In all, Nanoha is a cute show. The first season might be boring to some people and there's a fair amount of fanservice throughout, though it's not in-your-face like certain other titles. In fact, I was on the fence about Nanoha until I reached episode seven and I was hooked forever and beyond. So hang in there if you are struggling through.

Now for the description of the first season, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. This one mostly involves Yuuno Scrya, Takamachi Nanoha, and Feito/Fate Testarossa.
The next season is the masterpiece Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's. It turns up the action level to blazing heights and puts us right back in the seat of characters who only want to do the right thing but are conflicted.
The next season is Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS, which is different from the previous two storylines because it skips ten years into the future and Nanoha and Fate are no longer lolis! It is the most controversial of all the seasons and is generally seen as awful (hey, I liked it - and why are there so many fanfics regarding it if it's so bad, hm?), but it adds a lot of flavor to the base of military aspects of the series. Drama CDs and manga supplements elaborate on small things which happened to the cast in that time period like
StrikerS is blurry in my mind because I watched it once when it was airing back in 2007, and honestly, I cannot tell you much because I have forgotten significant portions of the storyline. So I recommend going to watch or read about it yourself after the first two seasons. This post is already a small Wiki anyway. Well, let me fly through some basic details to get you started.
After StrikerS? I am not too familiar with the newer material. I read bits of Vivid and Force (these are manga versions of the current continuation of the story that is supposed to supply as a fourth season), but I could not tell you want was happening in them, either. It moves away from Nanoha a bit for Vivio and everyone else, and I kind of wish Nanoha was the main focus again. Like in the first season and movie (which is epic beyond all words). Well, the story always felt like Fate's story and Hayate's stories, though, and StrikerS has another focus. I did like how Nanoha-centric the first few episodes of the first season were with Yuuno, but oh well. Here's hoping for a fourth season, even if they will busy with the second movie, and possibly third, movies beforehand. But hey,
There are FxF undertones in Nanoha (sort of, I guess they do not feel as strong to me - and yeah, that is weird with a cast of 80% females), but the canon material is vague in response to everyone's romance interests. Many people think Nanoha and Fate want to marry each other and everything to that degree, but I honestly would not mind if they were friends, just as long as they were together. So if you want a FxF it would not be odd here. MxM and straight? Nothing wrong with them, either.

Linker Cores
Each mage in the Nanoha universe has a magical organ inside their bodies called a Linker Core. This organ holds the mage's magical potential, and if it is damaged or destroyed the user might not be able to use magic properly or ever again.
Barrier Jackets
Barrier Jackets protect the mage as an armor during combat and are activated with a device's regular Device Mode, but there are exceptions. These armors range in various designs such as a school uniform, shirt with a skirt, and shorts, and are summoned by the magic user or removed if the device is damaged. Barrier Jackets cannot be relied upon alone, however. Mages can be scratched to the point of bleeding through the Barrier Jacket. Magic in the Nanoha world is not always lethal, too. If the mage wants it to be it can, but otherwise it might not be. Even if someone is hit with a huge attack (like Nanoha's Starlight Breaker) it will not necessarily kill them, and the Barrier Jacket protects that person too.
Technology and Intelligent Devices
Technology is an important concept for weapons. Each weapon is actually an intelligent device which can speak to their masters with programs embedded inside for certain types of magic. Different languages are used for the device's communication out loud or telepathically, as well, such as English and German, even when the magician is Japanese (it is normal to have devices which speak another language). Magic seems to be stored beforehand in the device, so if the user is hurt before attacking and cannot produce magic, the weapon still has it stored and prepared. The mage uses this device to wield their magical powers and to effectively aim attacks or whatever the device is capable of, so it is less common to use magic without the device but can be done in small doses. For example, binds around the hands or feet or small shots of magic are possible. Devices also come in a number of designs. There is no set one because they can be a variety of objects such as bracelets, rings, jewels, ect. Along with that, devices can change into different modes to enhance magic like long-range shooting.
Now for the description of the first season, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. This one mostly involves Yuuno Scrya, Takamachi Nanoha, and Feito/Fate Testarossa.
Nine-year-old Takamachi Nanoha is an ordinary third grader who lives in gentle, happy days. She lives in a loving family who runs a bakery and has kind best friends named Arisa/Alisa and Suzuka. Nanoha herself is a sweet and outgoing girl who wants to be friends with everyone and does not like to see fighting, but she still feels disconnection to everyone in her life. Nanoha believes she is insignificant to her family and friends and imagines herself to only play a supporting role to them, not really having anyone to talk to about serious feelings. Nothing extraordinary is evident.
Nanoha's world is drastically altered when she meets a certain ferret/human boy named Yuuno Scrya. Yuuno is a mage from another world who traveled to Earth to search for ancient artifacts called the Jewel Seeds, or Lost Logias, that he accidentally uncovered as an archaeologist and let escape. The Jewel Seeds ultimately found their way to Earth through the dimensions and spread across the planet (honestly they are only in Nanoha's city), so he now shoulders the responsibility to recapture them. These little Jewel Seeds are packed with extremely powerful magic and easily spring out of control to cause destruction on activation, thus it is imminent they are immediately caught.
Nanoha agrees to help Yuuno collect the Jewel Seeds after she and her friends find him injured in ferret form on their way home from school and take him to a veterinary clinic. One of the artifacts went out of control and attacked him, but Nanoha is unaware of the circumstances. Later on Nanoha hears Yuuno telepathically calling out for someone to help him and she races to the clinic, and there she battles the Jewel Seed the same monster blob which is harmed Yuuno before. With luck she seals the Jewel Seed with great skill and precision, showcasing her potential for incredible magical power. Yuuno asks for her help even if it is dangerous, and Nanoha accepts the offer to protect everyone she cares about in her city. Yuuno teaches her the fundamentals of magic and gives Nanoha her new and beloved little red jewel device to fight with, Raising Heart.
While collecting these mysterious Jewel Seeds, Nanoha meets a blond-haired girl named Fate Testarossa who carries a lightning scythe weapon called Bardiche. By this new girl's side is her dog/fox familiar, Arf, who deeply cares for her master. Fate seems more of a threat in the beginning because she warns Nanoha to leave the Jewel Seeds alone and swiftly becomes a rival to our protagonist, but we understand Fate's circumstances in due time. Nanoha sees straight through Fate and notices the sadness and loneliness in her red eyes, which stirs a set longing in Nanoha to befriend her. Fate is the person she recognizes that will quell the gap of sadness in her life that nobody else can fill.
Nanoha persistently tries to talk to Fate by introducing herself and asking questions, but her efforts all go in vain because Fate is so distant from anyone else's words. Alisa and Suzuka are worried about Nanoha because she acts standoffish with the current incidents and keeps all of her thoughts to herself. Around episode six her friends decide to let Nanoha tell them when she is ready and everything calms down between them soon enough (but they do not find out about Nanoha's powers until A's).
Fate's mother has been demanding for her to hurry and collect the same Jewel Seeds as Nanoha (which always brought the question to me of how Precia knew they were on Earth or even recovered but I guess she magically searched for them) and for Fate to obliterate anything in her path. These decisions inevitably cause the two magical girls to clash in battle several times. Fate's main purpose is to show love for her mother, Precia Testarossa, and collect the Jewel Seeds to make her mother happy so they can return to the peaceful life they once lived where both of them were cheerful and had a wonderful relationship when Fate was younger. That is Fate's only wish.
Precia has been cold-hearted and indifferent to Fate for years and the warm, loving mother Fate remembers from her early childhood is absent. Fate's sadness because of this has taken a toll on her, but her dedication to still accomplish the dangerous collection of the Jewel Seeds is heartbreaking and sympathetic; she goes to far enough lengths to almost get herself killed. Arf repeatedly attempts to get her master to stop but Fate refuses because her love for Precia transcends her will for logic.
There is an awful scene where Precia abuses Fate after she is unsuccessful with capturing only but nine out of twenty-one of the Jewel Seeds. Precia leaves scars on Fate's body after hitting her numberous times with a whip because she is infuriated with Fate's lack of results and has little patience for her. Once again Precia warns Fate to hurry with the collection of the Jewel Seeds.
The Time-Space Administration Bureau comes in when Fate and Nanoha clash again in battle for the Jewel Seeds. The people aboard the Arthura spaceship that are associated with the TSAB include characters like Enforcer Chrono, Cadet Amy, and Admiral Lindy. These people help protect the peace of the universe and its dimensions. Earth, or unrestricted planet #97 is not a key location in the Nanoha universe for grand events but now is watched over by them because of the Jewel Seed incidents. The TSAB Headquarters, which is located far away in space with a magical capital called Michilda, binds the story together with a military touch.
Chrono transports down to Earth to stop Nanoha and Fate's fighting and to question them about the cirumstances of the battle, but Arf intervenes and she and her master escape. Later on Fate once again shows her dedication for Precia by putting her well-being at risk with the collection of the last seven Jewel Seeds from the depths of the ocean. Fate cannot pinpoint the locations of the Seeds, so she decides to blast her lightning magic into the ocean and stir the activation of the artifacts to force their appearance and easily capture them. In the end, though, it turns out to be an exhausting feat that Fate and Arf are incapable of accomplishing by themselves.
During this particular time Nanoha and the crew are on the Arthura, watching Fate's progress on the observation monitors. Nanoha's city, Uminari, borders the ocean so it is close by and Fate's position is easy to locate. Nanoha is on the spaceship because she has temporarily separated herself from her family, friends, and school work to collect the remaining missing Jewel Seeds with Yuuno (everyone knows she has something important she can only do and must be away, but do not have a clear idea of what). As Nanoha observes Fate's struggles with the work, she is deeply concerned for Fate's safety because her life might be at stake, but Chrono explains to Nanoha it is best to leave the situation alone so Fate can tire herself and the Jewel Seeds will be ready to take. However, in a bout of worry, Nanoha disobeys orders from the Athura and has Yuuno transport her to Fate and Arf's location to give them support in capturing the artifacts.
Through teamwork, all of the Seeds are eventually sealed, but in a surprising act to everyone Precia comes to Earth (we do not see her because she just sends down purple thunderbolts from the sky) and Fate ends back with Precia in her lair, where her mother abuses her again out of anger. In a fit of rage and frustration, Arf strikes out at Precia at this point because of her cruelty towards her daughter even when Fate had tried with all of her effort, but Precia brushes off all her comments and injures her. Arf teleports back to Earth and Alisa finds her, which then leads to Arf explaining Fate's actions to the Yuuno and the TSAB. After they realize why Fate is fighting and her purpose, they decide to arrest Precia.
Around this point Nanoha and Fate have their final serious battle together for whoever would win all of the Jewel Seeds in one final decision. After an epic fight, Nanoha blasts Fate with her most powerful attack at the time, Starlight Breaker, and wins. Now with the fighting and Jewel Seed hunting to a finish, the bittersweet ending grinds into motion. During a period where the TSAB starts an invasion of Precia's lair, or otherwise called the Garden of Time, to apprehend her, a camera is put on Precia and she reveals plenty about Fate's past. Fate is unlucky enough to be there to listen to her and sees a female body which looks exactly like hers when was younger in a glass tube.
It is revealed that Fate was created by Precia as a clone of a girl named Alicia Testarossa who was killed in a horrible laboratory accident a few years prior, or Preica's true daughter. At first these realizations are unbeknownst to Fate (Precia left the death and Alicia's name out of her memory) and she is taken aback and depressed by this terrible information. All Fate had ever wanted was to have her mother love her and smile at her like she remembered in Alicia's memories, but Precia always loathed her because she never saw her as her daughter and could never give Fate a kind smile. Even if Fate had the same personality, powers, and appearance, Precia thought she was nothing more than a cheap copy of Alicia.
In the movie version of the television series we are shown extra scenes regarding how Precia turns insane from grief with Alicia's death and how Linith/Rinis, Precia's cat familiar who trained Fate to wield magic, is born and killed by Precia after the completion of Fate's training. It is never explicitly said Precia killed her but is obvious since Precia threatens Linith, telling her that her time as a familiar would be over once Fate could go out into the world and search for the Jewel Seeds.
Precia desired the Jewel Seed's powers to open a dimensional void that would take her to Al Hazard, or a lost magical capital of advanced technology that might have resurrected Alicia's intact body. Precia even goes far enough to laugh and tell Fate that she is a tool and worthless to her because she is not Alicia. When alone shortly after collapsing in shock and Nanoha and everyone leaves to help with the invasion, Fate thinks she should not have been born, though is encouraged by Bardiche to begin a brand new story/life. This motivates Fate to help Nanoha and the TSAB into Precia's lair by destroying robots and getting to the main power center of the floating building..
After the TSAB people begin to take over the base, Precia realizes that there is no more time to stay and moves onto the next phase of her plan. In a futile effort, Precia activates the Jewel Seeds Fate had collected and opens a powerful dimensional warp in the hopes of getting to get to Al Hazard still for Alicia. The lair begins to crumble and everyone there has to evacuate. Fate meets with her mother one last time and says she would do anything for her mother because she is her daughter - and would even follow her no matter want would happen - but Precia again coldly rejects her. What is even more heartwrenching is that Fate lingered there and appears to desire to be with her beloved mother after she falls into the void. The expression on Fate's face seems to be one of strained comtemplation for death with Precia and Alicia, but Arf holds her back from possibly going over the ledge. It is uncertain if Precia got anywhere with it because there were so few Jewel Seeds, but it is widely accepted it killed her since it sent her into dimensional space. It is a true shame that Precia never could understand how loyal Fate was, and that emphasizes how sad this situation is.
Later when things calmed down and everyone is safe, Nanoha and Fate meet on a bridge back on Earth and become friends. They cry and hug and both of them are glad they are no longer enemies. This is the last time Fate sees Nanoha for a while because she must go away since there will be a trial for the crimes she has committed. Cue happy ending with prologue!

The next season is the masterpiece Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha A's. It turns up the action level to blazing heights and puts us right back in the seat of characters who only want to do the right thing but are conflicted.
Six months after the end of the previous season, a new threat unvails itself. Yagami Hayate is sweet and caring nine-year-old girl who lives all alone in a house, and her life is lonely because her mother and father were killed in an accident. On top of that, she is paralyzed from the waist down and cannot walk. Hayate's doctor thinks she has a mysterious neurological disease, but the situation is much more complicated. One night when Hayate is reading in her bedroom a strange book on her bookshelf that has been with her since her birth, or the Book of Darkness, suddenly activates. Naturally Hayate is frightened but the results turn out to be wonderful for her and a cure to her lonliness. The results are revealed shortly after.
Meanwhile, Nanoha and everyone else return in all of their awesome glory. Fate is aquitted of her crimes and works as a temporary mage for the TSAB, and everything seems to be normal. However, in the first episode, Nanoha is randomly attacked by a girl in red and thoroughly beaten and Raising Heart is broken. Nanoha is even knocked over the top of a building and flew through another wooden building's front (that /had/ to hurt). Fate, Yuuno, and the Athura people arrive just before the red-clad girl harms the now-defenseless Nanoha, and Fate protects Nanoha with Bardiche. Then she utters the most epic line that gives me shivers when she first speaks to the red girl about Nanoha - "We're friends." The red-clad girl retreats and Nanoha is healed, but it is definitely not the last time they meet her. Nanoha's Linker Core is damaged for a while in the beginning of A's because of this attack and another one, but it fully recovers.

Drama CDs and manga supplements elaborate on small things which happened to the cast in that time period like
they lived normal lives on Earth going to high school until they graduated and Nanoha was in an bad accident where she thought she might not be able to walk again.
But hey,
Vivio calling her device Sacred Heart is so sweet to her mama.
